What Expression of Ideas tests
Expression of Ideas is the closest thing on the SAT to a free scoring block, because both of its skills follow rules rather than judgment. Rhetorical synthesis gives you notes and a stated goal, and exactly one option accomplishes that stated goal — the others are true, well-written, and off-task. Transitions ask what logical relation holds between two sentences, and there is only one relation. Students lose points here by choosing the option that sounds most sophisticated instead of the one that does the job the question named.
