What Algebra tests
Algebra is the single biggest scoring block on SAT Math, and it is the most mechanical: almost every question reduces to translating a sentence into an equation, or reading a line correctly. That predictability cuts both ways. Because the manipulations are routine, points are almost never lost to not knowing the method — they are lost to sign slips, to solving for x when the question asked for 2x, and to reading a rate as an intercept. The five skills below separate those failure modes so you can see which one is actually costing you.
