What Craft and Structure tests
These questions ask why a text is built the way it is, rather than what it says. Words in Context is the highest-frequency skill here and it rewards a specific discipline: decide what the blank must mean from the sentence around it before looking at the choices, because every option will be a real word that fits some other context. Cross-text questions add a second passage and ask how the two relate — agreement, qualification, or direct contradiction — which is a relationship you can usually name in one sentence before reading the options.
