Transition questions look like vocabulary. They are not. They are a single question about the relationship between two sentences, and the words are just labels for the answer.
Why it happens
"However" and "therefore" both sound analytical, and both fit smoothly into almost any academic sentence. Fit is not what is tested — direction is. One reverses the previous sentence, the other extends it.
See the trap
"The alloy resists corrosion in salt water. ___ , it becomes brittle below freezing."
✗ The trap: "Therefore" — treating a drawback as a consequence of the advantage.
✓ The fix: "However" — the second sentence works against the first, so the transition must reverse.
How to actually fix it
- Cover the choices completely.
- Read the sentence before and the sentence after, then say the relationship in your own words: same direction, opposite direction, result, or example.
- Only then uncover the choices and find the word matching your label.

What if two choices mean roughly the same thing?
Then neither is the answer — the SAT does not include two correct choices. If "however" and "nevertheless" are both offered, the answer is one of the other two.
